Today’s Gospel:
Luke 6:20-26
REFLECTION It should not be assumed from today’s Gospel that Christ was speaking against all people who possessed wealth. It was not a crime to be wealthy - unless the wealth were gained by illegitimate means. It should be remembered the Lord was addressing a great number of listeners, some of whom would desert Him as soon as the opposition to His teaching increased. Many of these people professed to be close followers of the Lord, but they still belonged to the multitude. For the most part wealth in those days belonged to the rulers and unfortunately many of these were already criticizing the Lord. It was to them primarily that these words were being directed. Many of these rich people lost their wealth when Jerusalem fell to the Romans several years later. That was the immediate fulfillment of Christ’s prediction. Today’s Reading: 1 Cor 7:25-31 PRAYER Lord, as the Psalmist once wrote, don’t make me too poor, that my faith falters. Nor make me too rich, that I become proud. But as you taught us, give us Your daily bread. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen. |
