Today’s Gospel:
Luke 6:27-38
REFLECTION In today’s Gospel, Jesus was now enunciating the laws of His kingdom, and at once it became obvious that His commandments were vastly different from and infinitely superior to, anything expressed in the laws of Moses. Under Mosaic law, men could apply to the judges and be sure their grievances would be heard. Debts had to be paid, and thieves were punished. Christ issued new commandments, and the startling difference between the two systems is even more noticeable when one considers the word translated “cheek” really means the jaw. It is “siagon;” the jaw or jawbone. Christ is referring to a heavy punch to the jaw, and urges that even in this extreme case of violence, retaliatory passion should be subservient to love. Active allegiance to Christ meant conformity to His will. No man should seek citizenship in the Kingdom of God unless he be willing to live as a true citizen. There are responsibilities as well as privileges in being a Christian. Today’s Reading: 1 Cor 7:25-31 PRAYER Lord, hard though it may be, we promise to follow your commandment, and love even those who hurt us. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen. |
