Don’t Wait For The “Last Chance”
    Today’s Gospel:  Luke 13:1-9

    REFLECTION
During the time of Jesus, it was not unusual for fig trees to be planted in vineyards. However, its presence amongst the vines indicated strong personal desires of the husbandman to have it there. The vineyards were an industry providing the finances necessary for the maintenance of the home; the solitary fig tree could hardly be placed in this category. It was probably there because the family liked figs. The surrounding vines were objects of the husbandman’s care; the fig tree was the object of his affection. Upon it he lavished his attention; its fruit was not for the market but for his own delight. It is hard to ignore the implications of this strange situation for the Lord was speaking to people who firmly believed they were the God’s favorite. Within the far-reaching international vineyards of the earth, God had planted a special race of people - His own chosen nation from which He would receive that which would gladden His heart. The outflow of their appreciation was expected to compensate for the inflow of the divine paternal care. Unfortunately God’s desires were not being realized. The fig tree reached full productiveness after three years and therefore the Lord’s indictment was fully justified. However, one wonders if the three years mentioned in today’s Gospel contained a verified reference to the three years during which the Son of God ministered to this nation. Yet when the people exhibited nothing but hatred; when the fig tree might have been cut down, the mercy of God extended the time of grace into the fourth year. It was of no avail for the barrenness of the tree continued until Israel cried, “His blood be on us and on our children.” It was only then that the nation was dispersed and scattered; it was then that the national fig tree was cut down. The mercy of God is as far-reaching as His patience, but the judgment of God is as certain as His predictions. The doctrine of “another chance” was never meant to blind men to the fact that someday will come the “last chance.”

    PRAYER
Lord, time is something man cannot control.  Therefore, help me to seek you now, not later.  Remind me to make peace with you now, not later.  In Jesus’ Name we pray.  Amen.
